APPLICATIONS

5MR Monohydrate, also called Orcinol, is a reagent for detection of aromatic aldehydes and of carbohydrates. Used as 0,55% solution in acidified EtOH with 0,9% ferric chloride, Bial's reagent, for detn. of sugars, glycosides and sulpholipids.

 5-MR is most valuable raw material for derivatizing into:

Food additives:  isoflavone, non-steroid, non-estrogenic anabolic for athlets; Grifolin/Neogrifolin - cholesterol-lowering agent;
Fragrances: 3,5-dimethoxytoluene - rose odor component; 3-methoxy-5-methylphenol - tobacco odor ingredient
Drugs: tetracyclin; penicillin; 5-methylangelicin- angular furocoumarin useful in photochemotherapy of psoriasis; ; phospholipase A2 inhibitor;
Bioactive deriv.: dimethylchromans; xanthyletin; depsides; coumarsabin; xanthones; dibenzofuranes,  schizopeltic acid; collectochlorine; beta-D-glycopyranosides sakakin, Corchioside A, anacardosid
Fungicides: halogenated derivatives; Chlorinated orcinol derivatives found in deseased edible lily bulb, are potential fungicides - J.Nat.Prod., Web release June 13, 1998; Insecticide etofenprox enchancers;
Cosmetics: prenylorcinol, grifolin/neogrifolin
Dyes: orcein; hair dyes;
Photographic chem: substituted trihydroxybenzenes
Add. for polymers: UV filters; stabilizers; antioxydants;
